The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on the 20th of August was gearing up for a nationwide strike starting at midnight.

This came after the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, was summoned by the police over allegations of terrorism financing and treasonable felony.

In a statement was issued after an emergency meeting in Abuja, the NLC directed all state chapters and affiliates to mobilize workers for an indefinite strike if anything had happened to Ajaero.

The NLC described these allegations as politically motivated and vows to protect the integrity of the labour movement.

This tension escalated after a police raid on the NLC national secretariat, which the authorities claim was part of a crackdown on terrorism. However, the NLC sees this as an attempt to silence the voices of Nigerian workers.

The NLC is called on all workers, civil society allies, and the general public to stand in solidarity during this critical time.
