A section of the Eleme Local Government Council secretariat was set on fire shortly after the newly elected chairman, Brian Gokpa, and his supporters arrived. In a conversation with former Ambassador Oji Ngofa, it was revealed that Gokpa discovered parts of the secretariat burned upon his arrival with councilors and supporters. A similar arson incident occurred at the Ikwerre Local Government Secretariat as the crisis across Rivers State intensifies.
Despite the situation, Gokpa and his team have vowed to reclaim the secretariat. Meanwhile, in Emohua, unknown individuals blocked the secretariat entrance, chanting slogans in support of former Governor Wike, resisting the new chairman’s takeover.
No arrests have been made, and the police have yet to issue a statement. There are growing concerns of possible violence in some councils. This unrest follows the controversial Rivers Local Government Elections, which saw the Action Peoples Party (APP) win 22 out of 23 LGAs, leaving one to the Action Alliance (AA).
In Ahoada East, where Governor Fubara’s Chief of Staff Edison Ehie hails from, police fired shots into the air to disperse individuals resisting the new chairman’s entry after the council secretariats were reopened on the order of the Inspector-General of Police.
