“Stop Reporting Police Misconduct on Social Media!”—IGP Egbetokun Warns Nigerians

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has advised Nigerians to report police misconduct through the Police Complaints Response Unit (PCRU) rather than social media. Speaking at the PPROs/Police Communication Experts’ Conference in Asaba, Delta State, Egbetokun explained that addressing grievances on social platforms often spreads misinformation and undermines the force’s credibility.

“We appeal to the public not to resort to social media when reporting the conduct of police officers but rather use the Police Complaints Response Unit,” the IGP stated, emphasizing the PCRU’s structured and transparent approach.

Egbetokun also highlighted the media’s critical role in fostering trust and accountability within the police force. He acknowledged social media’s influence on public opinion but cautioned against the risks of unverified information.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who hosted the event, praised the IGP’s leadership, noting that officers with experience in challenging states like Lagos and Delta are well-suited for national policing. Both leaders underscored the importance of transparency, public engagement, and effective communication in reshaping the public’s perception of the police.
