Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has emphasized the need for Nigerians to prioritize the credibility of presidential candidates over regional origins. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Shekarau dismissed ongoing debates about power shifting to the north in 2027, stressing that governance quality matters more than where a president comes from.
Shekarau called on political parties to present competent candidates for Nigerians to choose from, warning against offering subpar options. He also urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to address citizens’ growing frustrations over poor governance.
Referring to nationwide protests sparked by economic hardships following the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, Shekarau described the unrest as a national plea for better governance. While the protests initially began peacefully, they escalated into violence, particularly in northern Nigeria.
