Senator Tony Nwoye, representing Anambra North, has called for the enforcement of the recent Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to all 774 local governments in Nigeria. He urged the Attorney General of the Federation and security agencies to ensure the court’s decision is upheld, stating, “We are calling on all the security agencies to ensure that the judgement of the Supreme Court is obeyed.”
The Senate also demanded immediate compliance from state and local governments with the ruling, especially regarding the management of local government funds. The Senate plans to amend sections of the Constitution to fully support local government autonomy. The motion, co-sponsored by 12 senators, raised concerns over state governments enacting laws to circumvent the Supreme Court decision through mechanisms like joint state-local government accounts.
