Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu Alausa, has reinstated the 16-year minimum age for university admission, reversing the previous 18-year policy. Alausa stated that the 18-year age limit hindered efforts to reduce Nigeria’s out-of-school population and is unsustainable for the sector. “Education should empower,” Alausa remarked, emphasizing a new focus on practical skills. Going forward, the curriculum will balance 80% practical with 20% theoretical learning to better prepare students for employment, with private sector collaborations supporting this shift. Alausa, previously the Minister of State for Health, was appointed Education Minister after a recent cabinet reshuffle.
