President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been listed among the five finalists for the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project’s (OCCRP) 2024 Corrupt Person of the Year award. Tinubu ranked third in votes, trailing Kenyan President William Ruto and former Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
The OCCRP, which compiled the list from over 55,000 nominations, highlighted Tinubu’s controversial background, including unresolved questions about his wealth, links to drug trafficking, forgery, and financial misconduct. His administration has faced widespread protests against rising poverty, economic hardship, and perceived oppressive policies.
In 2024, Tinubu’s government came under fire for detaining protesters, including over 20 children, some of whom were later freed after public outcry revealed their poor treatment. Reports also highlighted allegations linking Tinubu and his family to properties acquired through questionable means. Critics point to significant declines in Nigeria’s economy, security, and human rights under his leadership.
