Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has condemned the Federal Government following a report by BudgIT, which uncovered nearly ₦7 trillion worth of questionable projects inserted into the 2025 national budget.

BudgIT, a civic-tech organization advocating for budget transparency, revealed that 11,122 projects amounting to ₦6.93 trillion were added to the budget by the National Assembly without clear justification. This represents 12.5% of the ₦54.99 trillion budget signed into law by President Bola Tinubu. Among the insertions were 238 large projects, each over ₦5 billion, totaling ₦2.29 trillion.

Reacting to the findings, Obi described Nigeria as a “relentless scene of corruption,” saying the revelations confirm his longstanding concerns about fiscal mismanagement and abuse of public funds. He criticized the government for prioritizing dubious projects over vital sectors like health, education, and agriculture.

Obi noted that the ₦7 trillion allegedly misappropriated surpasses the combined 2025 budget allocations for the Ministries of Education (₦3.52tn), Health (₦2.48tn), Humanitarian Affairs (₦260bn), and Agriculture (₦636bn), totaling ₦6.896 trillion. He added that the amount is also more than the ₦6.1 trillion allocated to national security.

Calling the situation “brazen impunity,” Obi blamed corruption for the country’s deepening poverty, high number of out-of-school children, and failure to support small businesses. He urged urgent action to end fiscal recklessness and ensure that public funds are invested in areas that truly support national development.
