Ahead of the PDP’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on November 28, indications suggest that Umar Damagum will remain the acting National Chairman into 2025. Despite facing criticism for perceived leadership shortcomings, party insiders report waning interest in replacing him before the next elective convention scheduled for late 2025.

A senior PDP leader revealed that Damagum’s retention is largely due to unresolved legal disputes, regional considerations, and a lack of consensus among party stakeholders. Additionally, his supporters are actively rallying state chairmen to endorse him during upcoming party meetings.

While critics blame Damagum for recent election losses in Edo and Ondo states, others argue these issues were beyond his control. Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor emphasized that ongoing court injunctions make a leadership change unlikely, stating, “Only a miracle can remove Damagum.”

The NEC meeting is expected to address party unity and preparations for the 2027 elections, with Damagum likely continuing in his acting capacity to avoid further disruptions.
