Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has raised concerns over erratic electricity billing, revealing that his power bill surged from ₦2.7 million in March to ₦29 million in April, despite purchasing a prepaid meter that remains unusable due to conversion delays by the distribution company.

Speaking at a roundtable with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Hamzat criticized the widespread issue of “crazy billing” by electricity distribution companies (DisCos), citing another case where a resident of Surulere received a ₦2.8 million bill despite paying ₦2 million annually in rent.

“Our people are suffering because of estimated billing,” he said, emphasizing the urgent need for fair and transparent billing practices.

The meeting also marked the signing of an MoU between the Lagos State Government and REA to improve electricity access in rural areas. Commissioner for Energy, Biodun Ogunleye, praised the initiative, stating it would bring consistent electricity to communities previously left in the dark.
