Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been reappointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second term. Her current tenure, which began on February 15, 2021, will now extend beyond its scheduled end in August 2025. The 70-year-old Nigerian, who made history as the first woman and first African to lead the WTO, was the sole candidate for the role. The decision was reached by consensus during a closed-door General Council meeting. African nations advocated for an expedited process to prepare for the WTO’s 2026 ministerial conference in Cameroon. Okonjo-Iweala has focused on revitalizing the WTO, emphasizing climate change and health in her leadership.
