Senator Ned Nwoko’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has created political turmoil in Delta State, unsettling Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the PDP leadership.

Nwoko, who was elected under the PDP in 2023, cited the party’s opposition to the creation of Anioma State and lack of support for his constituency projects as key reasons for his switch. He also accused the PDP of internal disunity and obstructing his political initiatives.

His move has sparked panic within the Delta PDP, with party leaders holding emergency meetings to strategize ahead of the 2027 elections. The PDP has downplayed the defection, insisting it will retain control of Delta North, while the APC has welcomed Nwoko as a valuable asset.

Amid speculation that Okowa may attempt a Senate comeback, political analysts predict an intense contest between him and Nwoko in the upcoming elections, making Delta North a battleground for both parties.
