Nigeria has confirmed 67 cases of Mpox from 1,031 suspected cases across 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). The affected states include Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Lagos, among others.

During a briefing in Abuja, NCDC Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, highlighted the agency’s efforts to enhance surveillance in the states for better detection and to prevent the importation of the Clade I strain of Mpox. The agency is also expanding laboratory capabilities across the country and raising public awareness about the disease.

Mpox, a rare zoonotic virus that can spread from animals to humans and between people, is endemic in parts of Central and West Africa. Symptoms include fever, headaches, weakness, swollen lymph nodes, and a distinctive rash that often begins on the face before spreading to other body parts. Human-to-human transmission can occur through direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials.
