The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has announced that water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam has been released into the River Niger and River Benue, warning residents in flood-prone areas to relocate immediately. The water release, which started on Wednesday, is expected to lead to floods, particularly in 11 vulnerable states, including Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, and Kogi.
NIHSA Director General, Umar Mohammed, emphasized the need for caution and collaboration during an interview on Channels Television. He noted that while the water is being released gradually to minimize the impact, residents must play their part by clearing drainages and moving from flood-prone areas.
The release of water from the Lagdo Dam has historically caused significant flooding in Nigeria. In previous years, floods have displaced millions and claimed hundreds of lives. For 2024, floods have already affected over one million people, with 259 reported deaths.
Mohammed urged residents, “Please move from the floodplains to ensure safety and prevent further loss of life.”
