Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has reportedly directed all commissioners and political appointees to either join him in defecting from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) or resign from their positions.
Speaking during a State Executive Council meeting in Uyo on Thursday, Eno confirmed his decision to leave the PDP, saying, “Anyone who claims not to know I’m leaving PDP is living in the 18th century.” He added that his admiration for President Bola Tinubu is one of the reasons for aligning with the APC.
The governor made it clear that only elected officials like lawmakers and local government chairmen were exempt from the directive. “I have nothing to negotiate with you—either follow me or step aside,” he said.
Eno also warned against any attempts to challenge his influence within the PDP after his defection, claiming he would still retain control of the party structure in the state.
Sources say the official switch to APC is expected on June 6, which would mark the end of PDP’s 25-year dominance in Akwa Ibom.
