The leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly escalated on Thursday as ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa returned to the Assembly Complex under heavy security. His supporters gathered outside, chanting in his favor.
Obasa was removed on January 13, 2025, through a two-thirds majority vote over alleged misconduct, with Mojisola Meranda succeeding him as the first female Speaker in Lagos. While Meranda has received backing from the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Obasa continues to reject his removal, claiming due process was not followed.
Tensions flared on February 17, when security personnel and Assembly staff clashed at the complex. Meanwhile, an aide to Speaker Meranda accused the police of withdrawing her security without explanation, raising concerns about political interference. The police have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
