The House of Representatives will present N704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu on December 31, 2024, as relief for vulnerable Nigerians affected by the removal of the petrol subsidy. This amount was raised through a six-month, 50% salary cut by lawmakers, a commitment initiated on July 18 to mitigate economic hardship and address public dissatisfaction.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, during Thursday’s plenary, praised members for their dedication, stating that the contributions reflect their commitment to easing the plight of Nigerians. The initiative stemmed from a motion by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who urged members to forgo half of their N600,000 monthly salary for six months to support struggling citizens. The funds aim to tackle hunger and provide economic relief amid widespread hardship.
