The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to deploy over 5,000 Bimodal Voter Accreditation Systems (BVAS) and other sensitive materials for the Edo State governorship election, scheduled for Saturday. Ballot papers and result sheets were delivered to secure facilities under tight security on Wednesday.
INEC is preparing to ensure a smooth election across the state’s 4,519 polling units with over 18,000 ad-hoc staff. The commission has also partnered with transport unions to streamline logistics, while security forces, including 35,000 police officers, will ensure a safe election. Drones, helicopters, and additional security personnel will monitor activities.
INEC’s efforts come as leading candidates from the APC, PDP, and Labour Party conclude their campaigns. The PDP raised concerns about potential bias, urging INEC and the police to maintain fairness throughout the process. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force has started airlifting sensitive election materials to support timely and secure operations.
The Police Force dismissed claims of politically motivated arrests, clarifying that those detained were linked to the murder of a police officer, unrelated to any political affiliations.
