In the early hours of Monday, operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Police sealed the offices of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the clerk. Armed personnel took control of the premises, frisking passersby.

This development follows the legal challenge by former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was removed in absentia by 32 out of 40 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, while he was in the U.S. Obasa has filed a lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court, seeking an expedited hearing to contest the legality of his impeachment.

His suit argues that the Assembly acted unconstitutionally by convening during recess without his authorization. He is requesting the court to fast-track the hearing and restrict the time for responses from the defendants, which include the Assembly and Speaker Meranda. The case has sparked division within the APC’s Governance Advisory Council in Lagos, as political tensions continue to rise.
