Court Confirms Julius Abure as Labour Party Chair: ‘INEC Must Recognize His Leadership’

The Federal High Court in Abuja has affirmed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party, ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to acknowledge his leadership. Presiding Judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, ruled that Abure’s leadership, established during the party’s March 2024 convention in Nnewi, is valid. The court also directed INEC to grant the Labour Party under Abure all rights due to a registered political party in Nigeria.

Justice Nwite stated, “The plaintiff has proven its case, and I hereby compel the defendant to recognize the Labour Party under the leadership of Barrister Julius Abure.”

The case was filed by the Labour Party (plaintiff) against INEC, challenging the commission’s refusal to recognize Abure’s leadership. INEC had argued that the party’s leadership was invalid due to legal violations during its national convention. However, the court sided with the Labour Party, granting the reliefs sought and awarding a cost of 5 million naira in favor of the party.

This ruling comes after earlier legal challenges in April 2023, which had temporarily restrained Abure and other party leaders from holding their positions.
