Philip Shaibu, the reinstated deputy governor of Edo state, has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC). Shaibu announced this decision on Saturday in Benin City, the state capital, less than a day after expressing that he considered himself an “unofficial member” of the APC. Shaibu’s move to the APC included key members of the Dan Orbih-led Legacy Group of the PDP.
Shaibu expressed that returning to the APC feels like a “triumphant homecoming,” as the party has always supported and welcomed him. On behalf of the Legacy Group, Shaibu announced their collective decision to join the APC, stating that they are ready to “reclaim” the state through the APC governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo, and his running mate, Dennis Idahosa.
This development comes after a federal high court in Abuja nullified Shaibu’s previous removal as deputy governor, ruling that his impeachment by the Edo state house of assembly on April 8, 2024, was politically motivated. The court ordered Shaibu’s reinstatement and directed the inspector-general of police to restore his security.
Following the court’s decision, Shaibu appointed aides, including a chief press secretary and chief of staff, on Saturday. However, the Edo state government criticized these appointments, describing Shaibu’s actions as “provocative.”
