The leading opposition figures in Nigeria—Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP—are in talks to form a merger ahead of the 2027 presidential election. This potential alliance aims to address widespread hunger and insecurity in the country. PDP Deputy National Spokesman, Ibrahim Abdullahi, mentioned on Channels Television that these leaders are willing to set aside personal ambitions to create a unified front against the ruling APC. Abdullahi highlighted that had the PDP managed its internal conflicts better, these key figures might have stayed within the party, potentially altering the outcome of the last election. The opposition leaders are focused on rescuing Nigerians from the current challenges rather than pursuing individual political goals.
