Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has withdrawn all criminal charges against human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi following the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other prominent traditional rulers. Farotimi had accused Babalola of corrupting the judiciary in his book, *“Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.”*
Babalola, addressing journalists on Sunday, stated that he respected the Yoruba tradition of obeying the directives of traditional rulers, describing their words as commands. He emphasized his commitment to his reputation, citing his past rejections of an oil block and ministerial nominations as proof of his integrity.
The Ooni praised Babalola for his contributions to the Yoruba race and the nation, urging him to forgive Farotimi, whom he referred to as a “son” who had erred. While Babalola has dropped his case, other lawyers defamed in Farotimi’s book may continue their legal actions. They plan to meet soon to discuss their next steps and issue a joint statement.
The resolution highlights the influence of traditional leaders in mediating disputes and preserving reputations in Nigeria.
