Adebayo Confirms Talks with Atiku, Obi on Possible SDP Defection — Obi Still in Labour, Says Tanko

SDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, says prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party (LP) candidate Peter Obi, are in talks

SDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, says prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party (LP) candidate Peter Obi, are in talks to join the Social Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 polls.

“People are joining my party, and we are welcoming them… El-Rufai, Atiku Abubakar, and even former Governor Peter Obi are coming,” Adebayo said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. He added that the SDP is open to all, provided newcomers embrace its internal discipline and democratic culture.

However, Peter Obi’s camp has denied the claims.
“As far as I am concerned, His Excellency, Peter Obi, is a member of the Labour Party. It remains so until when there is any other thing that may come up,” said Yunusa Tanko, Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, on The Morning Brief.

Talks of an inter-party coalition gained momentum following a March 20 meeting where Atiku, Obi, and others declared a united front to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027. With growing unrest in the PDP, LP, and APC, the SDP appears to be positioning itself as a new political home for disillusioned power blocs.
