The Labour Party, under the leadership of Julius Abure, has withdrawn the automatic tickets previously reserved for Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti for the 2027 elections. During its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the party resolved to open all its tickets—from the presidency to local offices—to all qualified Nigerians.
This decision follows a recent meeting in Umuahia, where Obi, Otti, and other Labour Party leaders formed a 29-member caretaker committee to lead the party for 90 days. However, the Abure-led NEC rejected the actions taken at the Umuahia meeting, stating that the party’s leadership remains intact after its March 2024 convention in Nnewi, Anambra State. The NEC urged members and supporters to disregard the caretaker committee and reaffirmed its confidence in Abure’s leadership.
Additionally, the NEC called on INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to stop assisting Alex Otti in causing further disruptions within the party. It also approved measures for filling vacant party positions and conducting state and local congresses.
