Several students writing the ongoing WAEC exams at Government Secondary School, Namnai, in Gassol LGA of Taraba State, were injured on Wednesday evening when their classrooms collapsed during a heavy rainstorm.
The incident occurred around 6pm, trapping students, teachers, and supervisors under the debris. They were later rescued by local residents. Some students sustained serious injuries, including fractures, and are receiving treatment at a nearby health centre.
A resident, Alhaji DanAzumi Lauris, said the school buildings couldn’t withstand the strong winds. The storm also destroyed homes in the area.
In Jalingo, heavy rainfall disrupted exams, causing delays and forcing some students to remain at exam centres until after 1am. Some WAEC papers reportedly arrived late, delaying exams until 8pm in certain centres.
Efforts to reach the Commissioner for Basic Education, Dr. Augustina Godwin, were unsuccessful.
