The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured victory in 16 of the 18 chairmanship seats in the recently concluded local government elections in Ondo State.
Joseph Aeemo, Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), announced the results on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Akure. While elections in Ondo West Local Government Area were rescheduled, results from Owo Local Government Area are still pending.
Twelve political parties participated in the elections held on January 18, 2025. However, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) boycotted the polls, citing concerns over ODIEC’s credibility.
This election marks the first local government poll in the state since August 2020. For over a year, local council administrations were managed by civil servants following the expiration of the last elected officials’ tenure in August 2023.
