A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by Chidi Lloyd and 20 other former Rivers State council chairmen seeking to extend their tenure beyond its expiration on June 16, 2024.
The former officials argued their tenure should be extended by six months, citing an amendment to the local government law by the Rivers State House of Assembly under Speaker Martin Amaewhule. However, Justice James Omotosho ruled they lacked the legal standing to challenge their removal, declaring their continued stay in office illegal.
The court confirmed their tenure ended on June 16, 2024. Despite the legal dispute, the Rivers State government conducted council elections on October 5, 2024, and inaugurated new chairmen the following day.
