A Federal High Court in Kano has disqualified the Chairman and members of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from overseeing the October 26, 2024, local government elections. The ruling, delivered by Justice S.A. Amobede, followed a suit filed by Aminu Aliyu Tiga of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who challenged their eligibility due to their ties with the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and failure to meet civil service grade requirements.
Justice Amobede ruled that the KANSIEC officials were unqualified, citing their active political affiliations, which violate constitutional and state electoral laws. He also disqualified Kabir Zakirai, KANSIEC’s Secretary, for not holding the required civil service rank for the position.
The court invalidated all previous actions by the Commission regarding the election, including the issuance of guidelines and candidate screenings. It further prohibited KANSIEC from conducting elections until properly qualified officials are appointed.
Law enforcement agencies were ordered to ensure the immediate removal of the disqualified officials.
