Court of Appeal Rejects Rivers Governor’s Budget Appeal, Calls It ‘Executive Dictatorship’

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld a Federal High Court ruling that nullified the ₦800 billion budget passed by five members of the Rivers State House of Assembly

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld a Federal High Court ruling that nullified the ₦800 billion budget passed by five members of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Edison Ehie. On Thursday, the court dismissed an appeal filed by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, stating that it lacked merit.

The appellate court ruled that Fubara withdrew his counter-affidavit in the lower court and therefore had no grounds to appeal a matter he did not initially contest. In its unanimous judgment, the court emphasized that the governor should follow the rule of law, not the “rule of might,” and described the situation in the Rivers State House of Assembly as “an executive dictatorship and a joke taken too far.”
