An early morning explosion on Saturday damaged the Tony Okocha-led All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat located along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The blast destroyed the gate and doors of the building, coinciding with the local government elections in the state.
Tony Okocha, the factional APC chairman, recounted the attack, stating that armed men arrived around 3:20 a.m., using explosives to cause destruction. “They came back a second time to burn the structure,” Okocha told reporters, noting that the security post was destroyed, and party members managed to control the fire.
Okocha accused Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara of orchestrating the politically motivated attack, stating, “There is no voting unit here, so it was deliberate to annihilate us and embarrass us.”
Voting began at various polling stations in Port Harcourt, but the police have yet to comment on the incident. Despite a court order barring police security, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) confirmed that the local government election would proceed as planned.
