The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that floodwaters in Maiduguri, Borno State, are beginning to recede, signaling a return to normalcy in the city. NEMA Director General Zubaida Umar provided the update, noting that while progress is being made, search and rescue efforts are ongoing. Over 400,000 people have been affected, with many being temporarily sheltered in eight camps provided by the state government.
In addition to evacuation efforts, NEMA has deployed water purification trucks to prevent water-borne diseases and has advised residents to remain vigilant against aquatic dangers like snakes. Umar emphasized the government’s continued commitment to the welfare and recovery of the flood victims, both in and outside the camps. The flooding was triggered by a spillway breach from the Alau Dam.
