Maiduguri is facing its worst flood in 30 years, submerging 70% of the city and displacing thousands of residents. The flood, caused by an overflow of the Alau Dam following heavy rains, has led to the death of 80% of animals in Sanda Kyarimi Park zoo and caused a jailbreak, with three inmates recaptured so far.

President Bola Tinubu has ordered immediate evacuation efforts and Vice President Kashim Shettima has visited the area to assess the damage and oversee relief operations. The flood has impacted key locations, including the Shehu of Borno’s palace and the University of Maiduguri, forcing businesses to close and residents to seek shelter in makeshift camps.

NEMA and other government agencies are providing search and rescue support as authorities work to assess the number of displaced residents, which could include 70% of Maiduguri’s population.
