Enforcement Alone Won’t Stop Corruption, EFCC Chair Says, as Focus Shifts from Prosecuting Politicians to Prevention

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede has called for a shift in Nigeria’s anti-corruption strategy, warning that focusing solely on prosecuting corrupt politicians and individuals has not worked in the last 20

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede has called for a shift in Nigeria’s anti-corruption strategy, warning that focusing solely on prosecuting corrupt politicians and individuals has not worked in the last 20 years. During a meeting with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Abuja, Olukoyede explained that enforcement has only led to more sophisticated corruption schemes.

“Enforcement alone has never worked, and it will never work. The more we prosecute, the more complex corruption becomes,” Olukoyede stated. Under his leadership, the EFCC plans to focus on preventive measures, including public awareness campaigns and strengthening institutional frameworks, to address the root causes of corruption rather than just reacting after crimes are committed.
