The Labour Party has appointed a 29-member caretaker committee, chaired by former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, to oversee leadership elections within the next 90 days. The committee, which includes former Deputy Senate Minority Leader Senator Darlington Nwokocha as Secretary, was formed after a NEC and stakeholders meeting in Umuahia, hosted by Governor Alex Otti.

Governor Otti explained that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by Bar. Julius Abure, had completed its tenure in June 2024. He urged party members to work together to resolve internal challenges.

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stressed the importance of the committee in preventing the party’s collapse, encouraging members to offer their support. The meeting also urged those with legal cases against the party to withdraw them for the sake of unity.

Senator Usman expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in the committee and pledged to carry out their duties effectively.
