Hey there, Nigerian Youth!
Let’s dive into the story of an incredible organisation at the forefront of empowering young Nigerians.
The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) is a recognised body and the mouthpiece of the Nigerian youth. NYCN was established in 1964 and given legal recognition in 1990. The council is responsible for policy formulation and implementation on issues relating to youth development in Nigeria.
A Quick History Lesson
The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) is a vibrant force that has been advocating for youth development since its inception. The NYCN was born from the need to create a unified platform for young people across Nigeria to voice their concerns, share ideas, and collaborate on national development initiatives.
From its early days, NYCN has been at the forefront of promoting youth participation in governance, social activism, and economic development. The council has grown tremendously over the years, adapting to the dynamic needs of Nigerian youths.
Achievements that are worth mentioning!
Here are some of the cool things the NYCN has accomplished:
- Youth Empowerment Programs: NYCN has implemented several youth empowerment initiatives. One notable program is the “Youth Employment and Social Support Operation (YESSO)” in partnership with the World Bank. This program, launched in 2013, aimed to provide employment opportunities and social services to vulnerable youths across Nigeria.
- Advocacy for Youth-Friendly Policies: NYCN has been a strong voice in advocating for legislative reforms that favour youth inclusion and development. They advocated for the “Not Too Young To Run” bill, which successfully lowered the age limit for running for political office in Nigeria. This advocacy effort, in collaboration with other youth organisations, led to the signing of the bill into law by President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2018, enabling more youths to participate in politics and governance.
- National and International Affiliations: The NYCN is affiliated with organisations that foster youth development in Nigeria. They are affiliated with The World Assembly of Youth, Pan-African Youth Union, and African Union. Notably with the NYCN’s collaboration with the African Union, they have facilitated the participation of Nigerian youths in continental programs like the African Youth Charter.
