Labour Party Warns Governor Otti: ‘Focus on Governance, Stop Meddling in Party Affairs’

The Labour Party (LP) crisis intensified on Tuesday as the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, warned Abia State Governor Alex Otti to focus on governance rather than interfering in party administration. Abure issued the warning during a press conference in Abuja.

The tension arose from Otti’s recent proposal to convene a National Executive Meeting on August 31 to dissolve the party’s executive councils, claiming their tenures had expired. Abure rejected Otti’s authority to make such decisions, emphasizing that it is the responsibility of the party’s national chairman and secretary to handle such matters.

Abure announced that the LP’s National Working Committee has established a disciplinary committee to address any actions undermining the party. He stressed that any claims of expired tenures are unfounded and asserted that the party’s leadership remains intact.

Abure criticized attempts to destabilize the party, pointing out that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had not officially communicated any issues with the party’s convention. He also noted that ongoing court cases validate the current party leadership.

The dispute within the LP could potentially benefit the All Progressives Congress (APC), which aims to challenge the party’s influence in Abia State, where it currently holds the governorship.
