The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has endorsed the call for former President Goodluck Jonathan to run for president in 2027. This follows growing speculation that northern elites and politicians are dissatisfied with President Bola Tinubu’s administration and are seeking a change in the next election.

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, recently expressed his support for Jonathan’s potential candidacy, even offering to step aside from his own presidential ambitions if Jonathan decides to run. Mohammed praised Jonathan’s experience and ability to revive the economy, describing him as the right candidate to lead the nation again.

The PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Jonathan’s leadership qualities and previous experience make him a strong contender. Abdullahi highlighted Jonathan’s reputation as a nationalist who respects democratic principles, referencing his concession after losing the 2015 election.

However, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the idea, calling it premature and a sign of desperation from the PDP. Bala Ibrahim, the APC’s National Director of Publicity, argued that Jonathan’s candidacy would pose no threat to the APC, asserting that the party could easily defeat him again, as it did in 2015.

Efforts to reach Jonathan’s camp for comment were unsuccessful, with his spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, not providing a clear response on whether Jonathan is interested in running in 2027.
