The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has accused the Federal Government of harassing its leadership and has placed its members and affiliates on high alert, warning of a nationwide strike if its president, Joe Ajaero, is detained by the Nigerian Police Force.
This decision was announced by the union’s deputy president, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, following an emergency meeting of the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) on Tuesday. A large group of union members gathered at the NLC headquarters in Abuja during the meeting, singing solidarity songs.
The union stated that the strike would commence at midnight on Tuesday if any action is taken against Ajaero. On Monday, the Nigerian Police Force summoned Ajaero for questioning over allegations of terrorism financing, treason, and cybercrime, with a warning that a warrant for his arrest would be issued if he did not comply.
The NLC’s NEC strongly condemned the government’s actions, describing them as politically motivated attempts to intimidate and destabilize the labour movement. The NEC affirmed that the NLC would honor the police summons but demanded an extension of time. The union vowed to take all necessary actions, including protests and industrial strikes, to defend its leadership and protect the rights of workers in Nigeria.
The NLC also called on civil society and the general public to stand in solidarity with the labour movement, emphasizing that the fight against injustice and oppression is a collective responsibility. “We will not be intimidated,” the NEC stated firmly.
