Recent reports revealed a significant increase in Nigeria’s fuel imports from Malta, reaching $2.08 billion in 2023, compared to negligible amounts in previous years. This surge has drawn attention to Abdulkabir Adisa Aliu, owner of Matrix Energy and a member of the Presidential Economic Coordination Council (PECC). Despite accusations of leveraging connections within the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) to secure favorable crude oil allocations, Aliu denies any wrongdoing.

Confidential sources indicate that Matrix Energy has been importing substantial quantities of fuel through Malta, including questionable diesel products from Russia. These products are often blended in Malta or Lome before being delivered to Nigeria. The practice of importing lower-quality fuels has raised concerns about its impact on consumers and vehicle durability.

NNPCL recently launched the Utapate crude oil blend, which has also been linked to transactions involving Matrix Energy. Aliu’s company reportedly benefits from premium crude allocations, raising questions about transparency and fairness in these dealings.
