The House of Representatives has introduced the Counter Subversion Bill 2024, sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, which seeks to impose strict penalties on Nigerians who refuse to recite the national anthem or disrespect national symbols. The proposed legislation includes severe punishments, such as a N5 million fine, a 10-year prison sentence, or both for those found guilty.
Examples of offenses that could result in a 10-year jail term include refusing to recite the national anthem, destroying national symbols, or defacing places of worship with the intent to incite violence. The bill also targets actions like setting up illegal roadblocks, performing unauthorized traffic duties, or organizing unlawful processions, which could lead to a N2 million fine, five years in prison, or both.
Additionally, forcefully taking over public or private spaces, including places of worship and schools, could result in a N5 million fine or a 10-year prison sentence. The bill also penalizes loyalty to organizations that disregard Nigeria’s sovereignty, with penalties of up to N3 million in fines or four years in prison.
In May, President Bola Tinubu reinstated Nigeria’s old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” originally written by Lillian Jean Williams in 1959 and composed by Frances Berda, which had been replaced by a military government in 1978. The bill is now set for its second reading, where its principles will be debated.
